The dog’s warm chestnut, ochre, cream, and white coloring stands dramatically against the muted olive-gray ground, giving the portrait the character of a classic late 19th- to early 20th-century sporting or country-house painting.

Signed “S.E.” at the lower right, the work retains its antique gilt frame, whose warm aged finish complements the painting particularly well. The modest scale makes this an especially versatile piece for layering into a gallery wall, library bookshelf arrangement, study, mudroom, or equestrian-inspired interior.

A soulful little portrait with exactly the sort of patina and personality we look for at Martingale East.

CONDITION
Stunning antique condition with age-appropriate surface wear, patina, scattered craquelure, and very minor areas of paint loss, including along the lower edge of the canvas. The gilt frame is in beautiful condition. Its smaller scale also makes it particularly good resting on a bookshelf or propped behind a collection of silver trophies, leather-bound books, or blue-and-white porcelain. The muted background and aged gilt frame give it enough presence to stand alone without overpowering a vignette.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0801/6782/9748/files/Saint_Bernard_Original_Oil_Painting.png?v=1789946333
