A beautifully atmospheric 19th-century American landscape by listed artist Charles Betton Russ (1824–1896), signed and dated 1863. Painted in oil on canvas board, the composition depicts a sweeping pastoral valley framed by wooded foreground, distant mountains and a softly luminous, cloud-filled sky. Tiny figures and rural structures tucked into the landscape lend wonderful scale and narrative detail.

The 1863 date is particularly compelling, placing the work among the earliest documented years of Russ’s painting career. Russ is associated with New England landscape painting and is especially known for mountain and pastoral views of New Hampshire and the surrounding region.

Presented in an ornate gilt frame whose warm, aged finish beautifully complements the muted greens, ochres and blue-gray tones of the painting. An exceptionally handsome small-scale landscape for a library wall, study, gallery grouping or layered English-country interior.

WHY WE LOVE THIS
The combination of its diminutive scale, beautifully moody New England landscape and elaborate gilt frame makes this exactly the sort of painting that adds instant age and depth to a room. We especially love the tiny figures disappearing into the valley—and the fact that it was painted more than 160 years ago.
