A wonderfully sentimental 19th-century oil painting depicting a young boy seated beside a long-haired spaniel in a softly lit interior. Painted on a beveled wooden panel, the intimate composition captures the affection between child and dog with particularly lovely attention given to the spaniel’s flowing coat, the patterned carpet beneath them, woven basket in the background, and shallow brass-toned bowl in the foreground.

The painting is housed in an elaborate period Victorian giltwood and composition frame with deeply molded acanthus leaves, floral motifs, scrolling ornament, and raised medallion details. Its aged gilding, scattered losses, and glimpses of the warm reddish ground beneath give the frame the wonderfully timeworn character that makes antique paintings like this so compelling.

Unsigned, with an incised X visible on the reverse.

CONDITION
Antique condition with age-related wear throughout. The painting surface shows minor abrasions consistent with age. The gilt composition frame has substantial losses to portions of the molded decoration, cracking, worn gilding, and areas of exposed underlying material. These imperfections are visible in the photographs and contribute to the distinctly aged character of the piece.

STYLING SUGGESTION
Display this petite painting where its intimate scale can be appreciated up close—layered into a collected gallery wall, propped among antique books in a library, or hung beneath a small brass picture light. The spaniel subject makes it especially wonderful for an English country interior, sporting collection, tack room office, or dog-lover’s study.

WHY WE LOVE THIS
It has everything we look for in a small antique painting: wonderful age, an evocative animal subject, beautifully dark Victorian coloring, and an ornate gilt frame that feels untouched rather than overly restored. The relationship between the boy and his spaniel gives the piece an unusual sweetness without losing the moody, collected character we love.
