Antique Black Beauty by Anna Sewell | H.M. Caldwell Equestrian Horse Book, Early 1900s

A wonderfully evocative antique edition of Anna Sewell’s beloved Black Beauty, published by H. M. Caldwell Co. of New York and Boston in the early 20th century. Bound in faded oxblood-red cloth, the cover features an oval portrait of Black Beauty surrounded by elaborate gilt grapevine and botanical ornamentation—a remarkably decorative example made all the more compelling by its unmistakable equestrian subject.

Inside, the book retains its illustrated frontispiece and beautifully ornamented title page, along with a period illustrated ownership bookplate. Perhaps most special is the handwritten presentation inscription to Paul M. Allen, dated December 1, 1908 and signed “From Mamma,” giving this particular copy more than a century of tangible personal history.

A beautiful decorative object in its own right, this is the sort of antique book that looks equally at home in an equestrian library, layered into a collection of horse and hunt antiques, or simply displayed cover-forward on a tabletop or bookstand.

CONDITION
Good antique condition with authentic age and wear throughout. The cloth cover shows fading, loose binding, rubbing and wear consistent with a book more than a century old, including fraying at the corners and edges and loss to portions of the original gilt decoration. The pictorial cover remains wonderfully legible and decorative. Interior pages show expected age toning, occasional spotting and signs of handling. Original handwritten inscriptions and period ownership bookplate remain intact. Please review photographs closely for condition and character.
