Antique Chinese Rose Canton Covered Jar with Bird & Peony Motif

A charming petite antique Chinese covered jar richly hand-painted in the traditional Rose Canton palette of soft rose, emerald and celadon greens, iron red, and creamy white. Delicate birds perch among flowering peonies and foliage, surrounded by intricate scrolling borders and beautifully detailed repeating lotus-leaf motifs. The domed fitted lid is finished with an unusual warm brass bud-form finial, giving the piece an especially collected, one-of-a-kind character. The vessel's form closely resembles the small chupu covered jars associated with late Qing and early 20th-century Chinese export and Straits Chinese decorative traditions.

CONDITION
Beautiful antique condition with expected age-related wear, glaze variation, small surface irregularities, and evidence of hand-painted manufacture. The brass finial may be a later historic replacement or adaptation and is included as found.

PROVENANCE
China. Likely late Qing to early Republic period, circa 1890–1920. Rose Canton decoration with stylistic similarities to covered chupu vessels made for the Chinese export and Straits Chinese markets.

Unmarked. An old hand-applied inventory notation reading “C43” appears on the underside.

Glazed porcelain with hand-painted polychrome enamel decoration and brass finial.
