Antique English Green Majolica Strawberry & Grape Leaf Plate, Circa 1890

A gorgeous late 19th-century English majolica plate featuring the classic strawberry and grape leaf motif so closely associated with Victorian Wedgwood majolica. Deeply relief-molded with an oversized central grape leaf surrounded by clusters of grapes, strawberries, blossoms, foliage and scrolling vine tendrils, the entire plate is finished in a wonderfully saturated emerald green glaze that pools beautifully within the dimensional decoration. The softly scalloped rim adds another layer of movement to this exceptionally decorative piece. Dating to approximately the 1890s, this is an unmarked English example of a celebrated period majolica design originally produced by Wedgwood.

Beautiful antique condition with age-appropriate characteristics consistent with 19th-century glazed earthenware.

MAKER
Unmarked. The mold is closely associated with the classic English Wedgwood “Vine & Strawberry” majolica pattern; however, without a maker's mark, we do not attribute this example directly to Wedgwood.

STYLING SUGGESTIONS
Display upright on a brass plate stand where the sculptural botanical relief can really be appreciated, or incorporate it into a collected wall arrangement of antique English ceramics. Its rich green glaze is particularly handsome layered into an English country kitchen, library bookcase or dining-room vignette alongside antique brass, dark woods, silver and other botanical majolica. Equally striking on its own, this is the kind of small antique that brings color, texture and unmistakable old-world character to a room.
