Antique English Staffordshire Ironstone Imari Hydra-Form Pitcher

A spectacular antique English Staffordshire ironstone pitcher in the distinctive Hydra form, richly decorated in an exuberant Imari-inspired palette of deep cobalt blue, iron red, turquoise, cream and gilt. The dramatically swept pouring lip and tall looping cobalt handle frame a beautifully shaped body covered in hand-applied Chinoiserie florals, stylized foliage and scrolling botanical motifs.

At 7.5 inches tall, this is a substantial decorative example with wonderful presence. The combination of saturated cobalt, turquoise and orange-red against the creamy ironstone body is particularly striking, while the remaining gilt detailing gives the piece just enough shimmer. Hydra-form pitchers became closely associated with celebrated Staffordshire makers including Mason’s, whose 19th-century examples were produced in a range of Japan and Chinoiserie patterns. Comparable Mason’s examples of this form are documented throughout the 19th century.

Beautiful enough to stand completely on its own, this is the sort of collected English ceramic that instantly gives a room depth, color and history.
