A beautiful example of late nineteenth-century American majolica, this antique begonia leaf dish was produced by Griffen, Smith & Hill of Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, circa 1880–1890. Its wonderfully sculptural form features deeply molded foliage in rich emerald green, accented by warm chestnut brown, delicate rose pink, and a golden yellow border. The softly scalloped edges, intricate botanical detailing, and lustrous glaze are characteristic of the naturalistic artistry celebrated during the Victorian era.
