A striking large scale antique Etruscan majolica begonia leaf plate, richly glazed in a dramatic palette of golden yellow, celadon green, turquoise, smoky brown, soft rose, and deep charcoal veining. The molded botanical form is beautifully detailed, with a scalloped leaf edge, raised veining, and a glossy pooled glaze that gives the piece wonderful depth, texture, and movement.
Etruscan majolica pieces of this type are most commonly associated with Griffen, Smith & Hill of Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, and date to the late 19th century, circa 1880s. The begonia leaf form was produced in a variety of sizes and color combinations, with yellow and variegated centers among the most recognizable examples. This larger 10.5" size has especially strong visual presence and displays beautifully upright on a stand.
DIMENSIONS
10.5"L x 8"W x 2"H
CONDITION
Antique condition consistent with age and use. There is expected surface wear, glaze variation, crazing, small glaze skips, and minor roughness/flea bites along the irregular leaf edge. The underside shows a yellow glaze with age-related crazing and a hand-applied “6” mark, likely a production, mold, or decorator’s mark.
STYLING SUGGESTIONS
Beautiful displayed upright on a brass or acrylic stand in a cabinet, conservatory, bookshelf, or layered tabletop vignette. Especially lovely mixed with other majolica, antique garden books, blue and white porcelain, brass candlesticks, or collected English country pieces for a refined botanical accent.
