A charming antique hand painted porcelain stirrup cup modeled as the head of a hunting hound, featuring the classic sporting phrase “Tally Ho” inscribed along the base.
Traditionally used at the start of a fox hunt, stirrup cups were filled with spirits and offered to riders while they remained mounted in the saddle—hence the name. The design allowed the drink to be consumed quickly before setting off across the countryside.
This example beautifully captures the character of a foxhound, with expressive eyes, detailed coloring, and a sculptural form that transitions seamlessly from the dog’s head into the drinking vessel. The hand painted glaze and warm tonal shading bring the piece to life, making it both a functional object and a decorative tribute to the heritage of the hunt.
Sporting pieces like this are highly collectible and make wonderful accents for equestrian homes, libraries, bar carts, and Ralph Lauren–inspired interiors.
