A wonderfully distinctive antique cast iron huntsman, depicted in traditional scarlet hunt coat, buff breeches, black riding boots, and a dark riding cap. The figure stands upon a substantial square plinth finished with an aged brass plaque engraved “HIRST.”
Solidly cast and beautifully timeworn, this gentleman has the kind of honest, richly layered patina that cannot be manufactured. Generations of paint loss reveal the iron beneath, particularly along the coat, shoulders, boots, and base, lending him the unmistakable character of an old hunt-club or country-house accessory.
Although his original intended use is not definitively documented, his considerable weight and compact footprint make him equally suited as a decorative figure, substantial paperweight, single bookend, or handsome doorstop.
CONDITION
Beautiful antique condition with extensive age-appropriate paint loss, chipping, scuffing, surface oxidation, and wear throughout. The red hunt coat retains strong color while displaying considerable distressed character, particularly along the arms and shoulders. Additional wear is present on the face, hands, breeches, riding boots, cap, and base. The brass “HIRST” plaque has developed a mellow aged patina. Structurally solid and remarkably compelling as found.
SIZE
Approximately 9.5"H x 3"L x 3"W.
MATERIAL
Solid cast iron with hand painted finish and brass nameplate.
STYLING SUGGESTIONS
Place him at the end of a row of leather-bound sporting books, atop a library stack, or on a hunt-club-inspired bar alongside antique silver and framed equestrian artwork. His slender footprint makes him particularly effective on a bookshelf, desk, or mantel, while his substantial cast-iron weight allows him to serve beautifully as a bookend or decorative doorstop.
