Large Antique Staffordshire Scottish Highland Hunters on Horseback — Pair

A striking matched pair of large antique Staffordshire figures depicting Scottish Highland hunters on horseback. Dating to the mid-19th century, each gentleman is modeled in traditional Highland dress with feathered bonnet, tartan-inspired drapery and riding attire, seated upon a dramatically posed horse.

The pair was designed to face inward toward one another, creating a wonderfully balanced presentation when displayed together. Their predominantly creamy white glaze is accented with restrained hand-painted black, flesh-toned and green details, allowing the sculptural form and charming naïve modeling to take center stage.

At an impressive 15 inches tall, these are unusually substantial Staffordshire figures with exceptional decorative presence. The expressive faces, hand-applied decoration, visible crazing and subtle differences between the two pieces are characteristic of early Staffordshire production and contribute beautifully to their antique character.

CONDITION
Stunning antique condition with age-appropriate crazing, glaze irregularities, surface wear and scattered losses to the original hand-painted decoration. Minor firing and handmade imperfections consistent with Staffordshire pottery of this age. One notable fissure present on one horse leg - does not detract from overall beauty or appeal of this spectacular pair.
