Pair of Antique Gilt Hounds with Basket Figural Objets d'Art

A wonderfully unusual matched pair of vintage decorative hound figures, each depicted seated upright while carrying an intricately modeled harvest basket suspended from a twisted metal rope held gently in its mouth.

The elongated silhouettes, attentive expressions, and beautifully mirrored composition recall the graceful sporting dogs found throughout traditional English and European decorative arts. Each figure rests upon a black stepped plinth finished with elaborate gilt acanthus-style scrollwork, giving the diminutive pair the presence of much larger architectural ornaments.

Their softly aged gilt finish highlights the sculptural details of the dogs, woven baskets, fruit, foliage, and ornate bases. Displayed together, they create a beautifully symmetrical moment on a mantel, library shelf, console, or atop a stack of antique books.
