An exceptionally decorative early-20th-century silverplate teapot by E.G. Webster & Sons, distinguished by an extraordinary level of ornamental detail from finial to foot.

The beautifully rounded body is hand-finished with elaborate floral, foliate and scroll engraving centered by a richly worked decorative cartouche. Applied floral swags encircle the shoulder beneath a gracefully domed lid, while the sculptural spout and sweeping openwork handle are embellished with deeply modeled acanthus and scrolling ornament.

Particularly striking is the elaborate pierced apron beneath the body, formed with intertwined ropework, leaves and scrolling feet. It gives the teapot an almost architectural presence and elevates it far beyond ordinary utilitarian silverplate.

Polished and displayed among sporting art, blue-and-white porcelain or a collection of antique silver, it has precisely the layered country-house character we love.

WHY WE LOVE THIS
This is the kind of antique silver that creates an entire vignette on its own. The silhouette is substantial, the engraving is beautifully executed and the fantastically ornate handle, spout and footed apron make it feel almost sculptural. It is unapologetically decorative while still pairing beautifully with the tailored sporting art, dark woods and blue-and-white porcelain that define the Martingale East look.
