Vintage 1940s Sculptural Ceramic Tankard

A wonderfully decorative piece of early postwar Japanese export pottery, this sculptural ceramic tankard dates to the Occupied Japan period, circa 1947–1952. The cylindrical body is richly molded in relief with a romanticized landscape scene of architectural forms beneath sweeping trees, all finished in a striking palette of saturated cobalt blue, turquoise green, warm amber, and creamy ivory.

The substantial molded handle continues the organic, almost architectural quality of the piece, while the deep glossy glazes settle beautifully into the raised decoration and give the surface exceptional dimension. The result feels far more decorative than utilitarian—part vessel, part small sculptural object.

Marked “MADE IN OCCUPIED JAPAN” to the underside, giving the piece a particularly specific and collectible historical context.

STYLING SUGGESTIONS
A fabulous little piece for adding saturated color and collected character to a bookshelf, library table, bar, or layered cabinet display. We especially love it styled as a small decorative vessel with a loose clipping of greenery, or grouped with antique books, brass, blue-and-white ceramics, and other pieces gathered over time. Its cobalt and turquoise glazing makes it particularly good for breaking up a neutral room without feeling bright or overly precious.
