A spectacular large-scale vintage Italian wall sconce, hand carved in wood and richly hand painted in beautifully aged shades of gilt gold, warm cream, ochre, and muted terracotta. Measuring an impressive 26 inches in length, the sconce takes the form of an exuberant floral arrangement rising from an elongated lattice-carved urn, surrounded by deeply dimensional leaves, blossoms, and scrolling botanical ornament.

Two gracefully curved metal candle arms extend from the lower foliate carving, each terminating in a carved-style candle cup. The remarkable depth of the carving and softly timeworn polychrome finish give the piece the unmistakable character of mid-century Italian decorative arts.

The reverse retains a faint Italian maker’s stamp that appears consistent with Palladio, the celebrated Italian decorative furnishings maker known for elaborate carved giltwood mirrors, sconces, and architectural accessories during the mid-20th century. Because the original stamp is worn, we are conservatively offering the piece as attributed to Palladio rather than definitively marked.

At 26 inches tall, this is an unusually substantial statement piece with wonderful architectural presence—a beautiful example of the lavish Italian craftsmanship that became synonymous with sophisticated postwar interiors.

STYLING SUGGESTIONS
A remarkable statement piece for an entry hall, paneled library, dining room, powder room, or layered gallery wall. We especially love it displayed against saturated olive, tobacco, oxblood, or warm ivory walls, where the aged gilding and painted botanical details can truly stand out. Equally striking flanking an antique mirror or oil painting if a complementary sconce can be sourced, or displayed alone as a sculptural piece of Italian wall art.
